Behind the scenes - photo shoot with City South News

On Wednesday we did a quick photo shoot for Esther (the fashionista) for this week's edition of City South News. Photographer Dale found some great locations around Southbank for our lovely model Nakia and luckily we dodged the rain... it started sprinkling just on our last shot!

Competition for emerging designers run by GC fashion incubator

The Gold Coast Fashion Incubator is running a fantastic competition for emerging fashion designers, with really awesome prizes up for grabs.

The competition provides an opportunity for designers to promote their labels to the shopping public and grab industry attention. Six finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges to promote and sell their designers in a “GROUP SPACE” at Sanctuary Cove Marine Village for 3 weeks from the 9th to the 27th March. Finalists will also have the opportunity to present their collections during a dinner event at Sanctuary Cove on March 27 where the overall winner will be announced - “Next Big Thing in Fashion” presented by Sanctuary Cove.

This overall winner will have sole use of the shop space for the month of April (woohoo!) and also scores return airfare from Gold Coast to Melbourne, 5 nights’ accommodation in Melbourne and booth space at the Fashion Exposed event in Melbourne in September 2010.

Aussie success... Jets Swimwear

Jets is a favourite of mine... not only do they make gorgeous swimwear, but they're local! Since 2001, Jets Swimwear has grown its premium swimwear brand both nationally and internationally. To make things even better, they have just received about $1 million in Australian Government funding from the Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Strategic Investment Program and the TCF Post-2005 Strategic Investment Program to continually improve and innovate through design development and research.

For those designers out there who are interested, the TCF Post-2005 Scheme is an AusIndustry initiative that aims to help develop a sustainable and internationally competitive TCF manufacturing and design industry in Australia. The Scheme provides incentives in the form of grants, paid annually and in arrears, for investment and innovation activities. For more info, you can call the AusIndustry Hotline on 13 28 46.

Veux runway show video

Footage from the Veux runway show at the launch party, 12 November 2009

Veux on the front page of mX newspaper!

Check out the awesome pic on the front cover of mX newspaper! The beautiful models Samantha Day and Nakia Ferguson looked fabulous in some of the designs currently featured on Veux. Samantha (left, brunette) is wearing a one-of-a-kind white jersey dress with swarovski crystal detail by Mido Mayassi, and Nakia (right, blonde) is wearing a black top with mesh key hole and diamonte detail by Sonia Kotze, and a black vinyl skirt with blue ribbon detail by Alana Dinse. Both the skirt and top are one of three ever to be made.

Hair and make up was done by Tracie Weaver (hairstylist) and Sarah Power (makeup artist) from the Powder Room. The girls did a fabulous job, and were so lovely to work with. I would definitely recommend them – you can visit their website at

Veux launch party and runway show

Over 100 guests attended the Veux Launch on 12 November 2009, at Chalk Hotel in Brisbane. It was a fabulous night, and we were thrilled with the support of all the people who attended and helped out.

As VIP guests arrived they were greeted at the door and received a gift bag and delicious cupcake. It didn't take long for the Dust Bar to fill up with guests eager to preview the best of emerging Australian fashion design and at 7:40pm the runway show began. The gorgeous Veux models were Samantha Day, Nakia Ferguson, Vanessa Gray, Tamara Wrensted and Monique Huddleston. Despite the super-fast changes and the wonky steps from backstage to the runway, the girls wowed everyone as they showed off 27 exclusive Veux outfits.

Special thanks to the lovely girls at the Powder Room who did all the models' hair and make-up. They were so professional and friendly, and did a fabulous job. Clare from Lucid Photography snapped up the action all night, and some of her photos are displayed here - thank you Clare! The Chalk Hotel events team was also wonderful to work with - nothing was too much trouble for them. We had such a great time - can't wait to start planning next year's runway show!

Protecting your IP as a fashion designer

A really good site that outlines the basics in intellectual property protection for fashion designers is www.ipfashionrules.gov.au The site explains what types of IP protection are available in Australia, and helps you work out which is best for your label.

It’s important to remember that with fashion, quite often its not the actual clothes you are designing that need protection – its your label. A trademark is very important to ensure no one else can use your label and pass your hard work off as their own.

While the site I mentioned is a great place to start, you may also want to speak to an IP attorney. I know one I am happy to recommend, so if you want contact details just shoot me an email and let me know. (info@veux.com.au)

Fashion IP podcast

I found this on the Australian Anthill website (great resource for entrepreneurs) and thought it could be useful.

It is a podcast interview with Sally Nicolson, Special Counsel at Griffith Hack, following recent allegations in the Australian fashion industry of copyright infringement. It discusses how to protect your intellectual property as a fashion designer.

Brisbane Times article about successful Aussie designers

This is a good read - an article I found on brisbanetimes.com.

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/small-business/managing/ahead-of-the-fashion-pack-20090619-cnip.html

It's great to get an insight into how these 'overnight' success stories are actually not overnight at all - their success is a mixture of really hard work, stress, creativity and a clear vision. Truly inspirational.
